The Central Regional Jail is located in Flatwoods just off of Interstate 79 in Braxton County, West Virginia. The facility, designed for a capacity of two hundred inmates, formally opened on February 22, 1993.It was the first of the prototypes that is the design of all of the regional jails.This state-of-the-art podular design allows for maximum security with minimum staffing through the use of the latest correctional technologies.The Central Region is composed ofnine counties: Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Lewis, Nicholas, Roane, Upshur and Webster.The Central Regional Jail is primarily overseen by an Administrator, a Chief Correctional Officer, and a 1st Sergeant.

The facility has a gymnasium which not only serves as an indoor recreation area, but can also serve as an emergency holding area.Separate interior spaces are provided for attorney/client visits, contact and non-contact visits, an up-to-date law library, a reading library, classrooms, and a chapel. The prison is equipped with extensive electronic security controls with provisions for central control of all areas in the event of an emergency.As with all of the regional jails, Central Regional prison has closed-circuit hearings through the “Courtroom of the Future.”

Pursuant to West Virginia Code §17-15-4, inmates who are sentenced to the facility serve the community in a variety of work programs inside, as well as outside, of the prison.Substance abuse counseling, GED and Adult Basic Education programs are available to the inmates.Chaplains make full use of the prison chapel not only on Sundays, but also on several week nights on a voluntary basis.

The prison employs approximately eighty uniformed, administrative, and support staff. An additional nineteen employees work at the jail through contractual arrangements to provide inmate medical care and food service.A clinical psychologist, medical doctors, and nurses are contracted to serve the jail population.Also, counselors are on staff for entry and follow-up counseling.

The jail is located in the geographical center of West Virginia.There are several state parks as well as numerous campgrounds located within a short driving distance of the facility.Burnsville and Sutton Lakes, each within fifteen minutes’ driving distance, provide an abundant supply of water sports, fishing, and camping.A modern outlet mall and a conference center are flourishing within five minutes of the jail.The facility is also about an hour from Charleston, which provides year-round sporting and entertainment events as well as access to theater and musical productions.

The Eastern Regional Jail -- located in Martinsburg, West Virginia -- is one of ten regional jails that will be operating in our state.This facility is a newly built complex which opened in September, 1999.This podular designed, ultra modern facility consists of three pods which house approximately three hundred inmates with an upgradeable maximum capacity of five hundred.The facility serves three counties -- Berkeley County, Jefferson County, and Morgan County -- and the prison also houses Federal inmates.In addition, the facility contains a separate computerized booking area, a gymnasium, a 24-hour medical staff, a full-time teacher, a counseling staff, and much more. The facility is staffed with eighty uniformed correctional officers and approximately thirty non-uniformed staff members. Located in the eastern panhandle, Martinsburg is a densely populated and culturally diversified area. There are many historical landmarks within a thirty-minute drive such as the Antietam Battlefield in Maryland, historic Shepherdstown which is home to Shepherd College, Harpers Ferry, and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and Skyline Drive in Virginia. Anyone interested in hunting, fishing, and camping can access Sleepy Creek State Park within a few minutes drive. Also located in a short driving distance are the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers which offer great fishing and whitewater rafting. Within an hour’s drive one can see the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens play or catch a baseball game with the Orioles. The Northern Regional Jail is located in Moundsville, West Virginia, and is one of ten regional jails that will ultimately be built in the State of West Virginia.This facility, which opened in October 1994, is one of the only facilities in the country that houses both a regional jail and a prison.Two of the four pods at Northern Regional Jail house pre-trial and misdemeanant jail inmates; and two pods, operated by the Division of Corrections, house convicted felons.Each pod houses approximately a hundred inmates.The jail serves five counties which include Brooke, Hancock, Marshall, Ohio, and Wetzel.

The Northern Regional prison has a medical unit which is operated 24 hours a day, a gymnasium, dining facility, a classroom with a full-time teacher, a newly computerized booking area, counseling staff, a law library, and much more. The facility is staffed with fifty uniformed correctional officers and approximately seventeen non-uniformed support personnel. The North Central Regional Jaill in West Virginia opened in August of 2001. The facility is located at the Stone Valley Rd. exit off of US Rt. 50,four miles west of the town of West Union. The facility is number eight out of ten Regional Jails in West Virginia. The North Central Regional Jail along with the Western Regional Jail are the two largest jails in the state. The four pod building is designed to hold four hundred inmates. The facility is staffed with approximately one hundred and sixty employees. The North Central Regional Jail serves the following nine counties: Monongalia, Marion, Harrison, Wood, Wirt, Tyler, Doddridge, Ritchie, and Pleasants. The Jail holds pre-trial and convicted misdemeanants and felons, females, and federal inmates.

The facility has a Nationally Accredited Medical Unit that provides twenty-four hour care. Counselors are available to talk to inmates regarding personal issues and to set up, services, programs, and special needs of the inmates. Volunteers from the surrounding counties provide Religious services , Alcoholics Anonymous, a Religious based Substance Abuse class, and literacy tutoring. Inmatesare also able to obtain their G.E.D. diploma while at the facility by attending the Adult Basic Education class.

North Bend State Park is approximately twenty miles west of our facility and offers camping, hiking, swimming, biking and lodging. We are also approximately one hour and a half from West Virginia University. Home of the Mountaineers.A variety of shopping is available inthe Clarksburg, Parkersburg, Fairmont, and Morgantown areas.

Directions to the facility are as follows: >From I-79 near Clarksburg West Virginia take exit 119 onto Rt. 50 west towards Clarksburg and Parkersburg. We are approximately35milesfrom Clarksburg West Virginia on US Rt. 50.

From I-77 near Parkersburg West Virginia take exit 176 onto Rt. 50 East towards Clarksburg. We are approximately 45 miles from Parkersburg on US Rt. 50. The exit for the facility is Stone Valley Rd. follow the signs for the West Virginia State Police and Regional Jail.

An Administrator, with the assistance of a Chief Correctional Officer and 1st Sergeant, leads a staff of 65 uniformed correctional officers and approximately 33 non-uniformed support staff members.In addition to highly trained correctional officers, the dedicated staff members provide a 24-hour Medical Unit, Education Department, Counseling Department, and Food Services.All areas of the facility are computerized and the state-of-the-art virtual “Courtroom of the Future” video teleconferencing isbeing fully utilized.

Located in the heart of the Potomac Highlands, Augusta and the surrounding area provide a beautiful rural setting rich in history.The area focuses on its Civil War heritage and it is the home to the Potomac Eagle Rail Excursion.The Potomac Highlands area is the largest single natural scenic and recreational area in the eastern half of the United States and has been termed a "sportsman's paradise." The South Central Regional Jail is located in the Capitol City of Charleston, West Virginia, and is one of tenregional jails that will be operating in our state.This facility was opened in 1993 and its podular design consists of three upgraded pods which house approximately 350 inmates with a maximum capacity of 372.The South Central Region is comprised of Kanawha and Jackson Counties; however, until the Western Regional Jail is completed, inmates from Lincoln and Putnam Counties are also housed at the South Central Regional Jail.Of course, the jail also houses city, state, and federal inmates.

Each housing unit, “pod”, of the jail is divided into eight sections of eight and sixteen beds to accommodate variable housing assignment related to the inmate population's pre-trial or sentenced status, security classification or gender. Each section has a day room, and each pod includes two secure outdoor recreation areas with a security wire-mesh cover.

Pursuant to West Virginia Code §17-15-4, inmates who are sentenced to the facility serve the community in a variety of work programs inside as well as outside of the jails. Substance abuse counseling and Adult Basic Education programs are available to the inmates. Chaplains make full use of the jail chapel on a voluntary basis on Sunday as well as several week nights.
